DIY handmade soap – the perfect gift

DIY handmade soap – the perfect gift

With Christmas approaching, I like to think of unique and thoughtful gifts that I can make myself. DIY-ing a gift not only makes it personal, it also saves you a bit of money too!

One thing I've always wanted to do was to make my own soap. I tried recently and it was very simple and straightforward, so I thought I'd share my process here so you guys can try your hand at it too. If you make a good sized batch, these would make lovely stocking stuffers or lovely small gifts that can be put in the post to friends and family!

This recipe only requires 3 ingredients! I made 2 bars of soap with this, so feel free to increase the quantities as you need.

Ingredients:

  • 250g melt and pour soap base (I used this one)
  • 2 tsp honey
  • 2 tbs rolled oats

Equipment:

  • Glass bowl
  • Spatula
  • Soap mould
  • Pestle and mortar
  • Knife

Method:

Gather up everything you need and now it's time to prep the ingredients.

First cut up your soap base into cubes and put it in a glass bowl. Then grind the oats with a pestle and mortar. You can use a food processor for this. Sprinkle a light layer of the oats into the soap moulds (about a pinch per bar).

Melt the soap base. I used a glass bowl on top of a pan of heated water, but small bursts of 10 seconds in the microwave would do the trick too. Then mix the oats and honey into the melted soap base using your spatula, and carefully pour it into your soap moulds.

Let the soap cool for a few hours (I left mine for 24 hours, just to make sure it was set properly), then carefully pop it out of the mould.

And there you have it, home made soap. How easy was that?! Wrap them in a bit of twine, and you've just made some lovely gifts.

Next time, I'm going to experiment with some essential oils that I love, probably some lavender, maybe some bergamot. If you do try this out, let me know how you get on and what scents you experimented with!
